Introduction to our ACTS and ABCs
In 1998 BOC’s Chief Executive recognised that BOC was operating in a mature market with flagging shareholder returns. A project was launched, the aim of which was to get the company into a different league in terms of sales and profit, and returns for our investors.
BOC was restructured into global lines of business to drive best operating practice, best commercial practice and global marketing.
The Lines of Business, so-called 'engines of performance', had a great degree of power divested to them, particularly in terms of devolved targets and profit accountability.
Geographic Shared Service organisations were created for the so-called Enabling Functions of HR, IM and Finance, to service all business units in a particular geography.
Fundamental to the success of the Project, was that each Business Unit and shared service organisation across the globe would have the same organisation structure and move to common processes and systems.
In parallel, but separate to the development of these competencies, a set of four corporate 'cultural pillars / principles' were identified. These were Accountability, Collaboration, Transparency and Stretch which are referred to by the acronym ACTS.
It was believed that full accountability, collaboration, transparency and stretch were critical to the new operating model. ACTS principles would bring about the desired levels of interaction between Business Units across the geographies and with their local services functions.
A set of competencies were developed that defined the new competence, culture and behaviour required for success in the High Performance Operating Environment that BOC was aspiring to.
The competencies were linked directly to ACTS and were termed the ABCs - ACTS Behavioural Competencies.
The ABC models were issued in 2002.
There are now five models, aimed at:
* Senior Leaders
* Middle Managers
* First Line Managers
* Service & Operations
* Graduates
As you go through your recruitment process with BOC you undoubtedly will encounter the ABC’s as they were specifically designed to be used in recruitment and selection and you should expect these competencies to be used.
Once you have joined the company if you are successful you will encounter these competencies again with regard to your personal development.
Further information on the ABC’s can be found under the Application process section.
