Market strategist and programme manager

Name:

Sam

Current job title:

Market strategist & programme manager

Location:

Industrial & Special Products (ISP) marketing department, Guildford

Date recruited:

April 2003

Role recruited into

Retail product analyst

Previous work history:

Senior Market Intelligence Analyst with Thames Water

Various Marketing experience including exhibition management, strategy development etc

Why did I apply to BOC?:

Sounds corny but my secondary school was near Windlesham and during our GCSE’s we had a weeks work experience to complete. I had a very dull time at a High Street bank while two of my friends worked for BOC and loved every minute of it. I had also heard good things about how they value their staff and that they are a good company.

Main job responsbilities:

My main focus is developing appropriate strategies to enable the achievement of Industrial Products business objectives in the area of gas welding and safety equipment.

I develop business and communications plans related to these strategies and I also have to programme manage the planning and implementation of all marketing initiatives and projects in the Industrial Equipment business area.

Finally, but by no means least I have line management responsibility for the inbound sales marketing function.

The most exciting thing about my role:

It varies from day to day, and is always very interesting and relevant. I can see what effect my work has on shaping BOC’s Industrial Equipment Business. I feel it gives me great exposure to the business and is a great foundation on which to build my career.

The thing I like least about my job:

There doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day, and unfortunately with this type of work you cannot please everyone. For example I am currently looking at Best Commercial Operating Practice which is vitally important but doesn’t necessarily aid a short term increase in sales and could be perceived as further restrictions on the ability of stores to sell more

Where could you see your career going?:

I definitely want to remain in Marketing, it is where I feel my strengths lie. I am also thoroughly enjoying the retail, product side of BOC so would like my Boss’s job and then my senior managers position.

What do you like about BOC?:

I  really like the view that BOC has of its employees, we are treated well and invested in and it shows. Never have I known a business with so many long serving employees. I also like the way you are actively encouraged to move around and up in the business.
