Shielding gases for MIG welding and TIG welding
We supply argon as a totally inert gas to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination.
We also supply a range of shielding gas mixtures - Argoshield, Alushield and Stainshield - that contain active components and can have beneficial impact on the welding process and the properties of the weld.
The composition of our shielding gas mixtures are optimised for:
- Material.
- Thickness.
- Welding position.
- Welding technique.
We supply shielding gases as:
- High pressure cylinders in a range of sizes and capacities.
- For high volume applications, components can be delivered as bulk gases, mixed on your site and delivered by pipeline to the point of use.
Argoshield – for MIG welding
Argoshield is the tradename for BOC’s range of shielding gases containing the following three gases:
- Argon – for its ability to create the welding arc that allows spray transfer to be achieved, increasing the amount of weld metal deposited.
- Carbon dioxide – to improve the size and shape of the weld bead through increased melting and improved fusion characteristics.
- Oxygen – to reduce the surface tension of the molten metal and droplet sizes and therefore reduce the amount of welding wire needed, and the risk of cracks.
The combination of the properties of the gases used in the Argoshield range create mixtures that can be tailored for welding a range of material thickness. The Argoshield range provides improved welding performance and a lower operating cost than other shielding gases.
Argoshield mixtures are only used for MIG welding and are suitable for:
- Carbon steel.
- Alloy steel.
- Some stainless steels.
Alushield – for MIG and TIG welding
Alushield is the name for BOC’s range of shielding gases containing the following two gases:
- Helium – for its high thermal efficiency, transferring more energy from the arc into the weld.
- Argon – for its ability to create the welding arc that allows spray transfer to be achieved, increasing the amount of weld metal deposited. But also because it produces a deep and broad penetration when coupled with helium.
The combination of the properties of the gases used in the Alushield range create mixtures tailored for welding a range of material thickness. The Alushield range provide improved welding speed, increased deposition rates and reduced preheat requirements.
Alushield mixtures are used for MIG and TIG welding and are suitable on the following materials:
- Aluminium and aluminium alloys.
- Copper and copper alloys.
- Carbon and alloy steels.
- Stainless steel and nickel alloys.
- Titanium.
Stainshield – for MIG and TIG welding
Stainshield is the name for BOC’s range of shielding gases containing either the following three gases:
- Helium – for its high thermal efficiency, transferring more energy from the arc into the weld
- Argon – for its ability to create the welding arc that allow spray transfer to be achieved, increasing the amount of weld metal deposited. But also because it produces a deep and broad penetration when coupled with helium
- Carbon dioxide – to improve the arc stability and the droplet transfer characteristics to reduce spatter
Or the following two gases, for austenitic stainless steels:
- Argon – for its ability to create the welding arc that allows spray transfer to be achieved, increasing the amount of weld metal deposited
- Hydrogen – to scavenge oxygen, give faster welding and a bright finish
The Stainshield range allows smooth, clean and defect free welds in all grades of stainless steel and other materials.
Stainshield mixtures are used for MIG and TIG welding and are suitable on the following materials:
- Stainless steels and austenitic stainless steel.
- Nickel alloys.
Fuel gases – for oxy-fuel welding
The high flame temperature required for oxy-fuel welding is obtained by combining oxygen with one of the following fuel gases:
- Acetylene – the premier fuel gas for welding and cutting due to its high flame temperature, high heat distribution and local heating. The only fuel gas that creates a flame hot enough to cut and weld steel.
- Propane – cheaper but lower productivity than acetylene due to the lower flame temperature.
- Hydrogen – as a fuel gas in oxy-hydrogen welding used for aluminium and underwater welding.
We also supply:
- Equipment and consumables for welding – for oxy-fuel welding, arc welding, resistance welding and plasma welding.
- Laser gases – a full range of lasing and assist gases for applications where high penetration, high speed and precision are needed.
- Cutting Gases - fuel gases and laser gases.
